Hey Guys,
Last night it was my turn to write a blog post titled Was Maura Murray Pregnant? Don't Be So Quick to Disregard it Just Yet!
If you caught episode 2 of Oxygen Network's The Disappearance of Maura Murray, you know that one of the main elements of the episode involved the long debated question of whether or not Maura Murray was pregnant when she disappeared. I LOVE the show so far....but was very disappointed with the way they investigated this topic last night.
James Renner (author of best selling Maura Murray book True Crime Addict: How I Lost Myself in the Mysterious Disappearance of Maura Murray & the famous Maura Murray blog) was the first guest. He talked about how he thinks Maura Murray left voluntarily, and was running from the men in her life. He also said he thinks Maura Murray was pregnant.
Since the main goal of the show is to investigate all theories to find out what may have truth to it and what is just "noise" derailing the investigative process, hosts Art and Maggie attempted to take a crack at the Maura Murray pregnancy question. They tracked down Erin O'Neil: an RN who was a former classmate of Maura's, and asked her she thought Maura Murray was pregnant.
First, from what I have read in the past Maura and Erin were not close friends, more like acquaintances from being in the same Umass nursing program. Erin said she didn't think Maura was pregnant, and part of the nursing homework was to email each other "Clinical Definitions". I talked to a family member who is an RN and she said this makes sense and is common in nursing school. There is essentially an entirely different 'language' nurses use to communicate patient care, chart, etc and when she was in nursing school the ongoing assignment was to make flashcards with clinical definitions and practice them with each other. This seems like what Erin was describing, only it was done via email instead of flash cards. It was very interesting that the show was able to get a copy of the final homework assignment Maura Murray submitted via email at 3:32am. The title was "Maternity Clinical Definitions" and the first was "Duramorph" (Morphine Sulfate). Maura had a number of subheadings with descriptions such as purpose, route, usual dose, etc.
When Maura Murray disappeared, NH police working in conjunction with UMass police brought in a computer forensics team to go through Maura's computer for clues. The internet history on Maura Murray's computer that caused speculation that she may have allegedly been pregnant were Google searches like "effects of alcohol on unborn fetus", and other things very similar to that. Police have not released the exact search terms. My family member who is an RN doesn't know about Maura Murray's case or any background. I gave a very brief overview and said because there was homework that involved writing out clinical definitions, the people on the show basically said that Google searches for "the effect of alcohol on an unborn fetus" were likely just part of looking into an writing down clinical definitions. My family member stopped me and said "That doesn't make sense. 'The effects of alcohol on an unborn fetus isn't a 'clinical definition'. A clinical definition would be something like 'define SSRI' or the meaning of abbreviations like Tx (treatment)".
I spent a couple hours backtracking. I wanted to find out the ORIGIN of this theory. Where did speculation that Maura Murray might have been pregnant even come from? IT CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE POLICE! Awhile back James Renner was able to sit down and speak with Lt. Scarinza, the lead investigator of the Maura Murray case before he retired. The police based the conclusion that they believed Maura Murray was pregnant (or thought she was pregnant) from the computer forensics results. .”The searches did not relate to any possible homework. This is why I do not believe these searches had anything to do with her school work, and could be totally unrelated. Yes, Maura was a nursing student, but she completed her final homework assignment just after 3am that morning. These VERY specific searches were done much later in the day.” said James in reference to his interview with Scarinza.
I'm confused why Oxygen's The Disappearance of Maura Murray episode 2 was so quick to slam the door on the possibility of Maura being pregnant, just based on what a fellow student said. It doesn't seem like they took the police/computer forensic's analysis and determination into account at all. I would love to ask Maggie and Art why they think Maura was searching this topic well after her homework was done and sent in, and minutes before she began searching for lodging in the New Hampshire/Vermont area shortly before she took off forever.
I said in my blog post that I do not have a theory on what happened to Maura, and I don't have an opinion on whether or not she was pregnant, simply because there is no way to make that determination without evidence. But I would put a higher value on police/forensics conclusion instead of an acquaintance. The forensics team obviously knew she was a nursing student, had access to her entire computer (which would likely also consist of her homework assignments), and STILL believed she was pregnant ad that these searches were unrelated to school work. The timeline here just doesn't add up! Maybe there was more they found out behind the scenes, but if that's the case it should be discussed.
What are your thoughts about this subject?
