Was Butch Atwood ever officially a suspect? he was the bus driver and the last person to see maura murray. he lived across the street from where the car accident was on route 112. Butch is not alive he passed away in Florida. he also took two lie detector tests and failed the first one. but police never made him an official suspect I dont believe. he also helped police search after they couldnt find Maura Murray and even called police. why do people online act like he is the one who took maura? people online also do say that his story changed and that he lied about being a haverhill new hampshire cop. so was he named a suspect for sure or not?

Hi Jaxie! I was so happy to get a notification on my phone that you had posted. I think it's very important to talk about Butch Atwood in relation to the Maura Murray case, as he played a pivotal role, and was the only person we know of who actually interacted with her post accident. I'm going to be writing a blog post about this. Lets go question by question and expand a bit.
"Was Butch Atwood ever officially a suspect?"
We don't know. New Hampshire State Police have never officially named any suspects publicly. Was Butch Atwood looked into? You bet! Statistically, it's often the last person with interaction with the victim that police hone in on, because...they were the last person to see someone living! It just makes sense. We know that police went as far as to fly down to Florida, where as you said he was living in his final years to further question him. But the likelihood of Butch Atwood, in infamous bus driver, having anything to do with Maura Murray's disappearance is slim to none. To start, he lived with his wife (Barbara) and elderly mother (Violet) who were both home at the time. He called police right away after the crash, and multiple people can confirm they saw Butch Atwood pretty much the whole time sitting in his school bus which was parked in the driveway. And again, like you said, he was assisting police when they were searching and trying to find Maura Murray after they realized the accident scene was empty. When would there have been time for him to have kidnapped Maura Murray or done something with her? Don't forget he too was elderly, very obese and out of shape.
"he also took two lie detector tests and failed the first one"
Ah, the Butch Atwood lie detector saga. This is something that needs to really be looked at. Police say very little about this case. Police have NEVER made a statement that Butch Atwood took lie detector tests, or that he failed or passed. This information originally came from James Renner's blogs. He states that he spoke to Butch Atwood's wife Barbara, who said Butch took two lie detector tests. She said the police told him he failed his first polygraph test about Maura Murray, but passed the second one. The first one she attributes to his chronic health problems/medication, which ABSOLUTELY can affect polygraph results. When looking at lie detector tests in oen cases, how much weight to do you put on this aspect? While I think it is relevant, I always remind myself a couple things. First, polygraphs are inadmissible in court. There is a reason for that...because they are NOT 100% accurate, things like health, medication, stress can alter accuracy as well. Butch Atwood either kidnapped Maura Murray or he didn't. One lie detector test may have said he was involved, but the other said he wasn't involved. One is wrong, one is right...which one is it?
"why do people online act like he is the one who took maura?"
Because Butch Atwood was the last person to see Maura Murray...plain and simple. In most circumstances, there would be a high likelihood he was involved. But very unlikely here. I notice that the people who start pointing fingers at Butch and say things like "It was the bus driver! The story seems so sketchy it had to have been him!" are usually people who are new to the Maura Murray case, and have not yet been able to really learn about the case and the circumstances. For the people who have been investigating for years (the "citizen detectives", as I keep hearing Oxygen use in the trailers for the MM show), I RARELY come across anyone who believes Butch Atwood was involved.
"people online also do say that his story changed and that he lied about being a haverhill new hampshire cop."
We don't know if his story changed. People are basing this off of newspaper articles/TV shows. It does seem like his accounts of the night slightly vary (for example, in one newspaper it mentioned he say Maura Murray sitting inside her car, in another it says he saw Murray outside of the car). But are these quotes accurate, word for word, or did a reporter get it wrong or slightly misquote? Because that happens often. Theres quite a bit of variation in reporting the facts in article to article, which is one of the things that makes Maura's case so frustrating. We don't know the actual facts.
Butch Atwood didn't lie about being a Haverhill, NH cop...however....it does seem like he did lie about being a Taunton, MA. An interview says he was a former Taunton Massachusetts cop, and that is why he often helps people. But there are no records of this being true. I find this pretty bizarre, and would love to know more details from the reporter (also, why wasn't this verified before going to print)? Why did Butch Atwood feel the need to mention something like this if it was not true? Did he have a history of telling people up in NH that was his former occupation? Did his employer think he was a former police officer, and did it have any baring on why he was hired as a school bus driver? Researching this brings me to a Reddit thread from several days ago where this was an entire topic. A lot of people seem to think it doesn't matter and has no effect on the case. While it likely doesn't, I still find this very odd and would like to get more information. Will they discuss it on the Oxygen series at all? I sure hope so!
"so was he named a suspect for sure or not?"
Again, no, he was never publicly named a suspect, but no one has been. But he was definitely someone police spent a lot of time talking to to get as much information as possible and felt he was important enough to continue talking to even after he moved. Do I think he was involved in any way? No. I think he was a good Samaritan who was trying to help, and sadly got caught up in a lot of noise and harassment because he was the last person to see Maura Murray. I also think he felt guilt that he pulled over that night, as in interviews he has made mention of his side (being a big man), and how it may be very likely that Maura didn't accept help from him because of his intimidating stature, and she could have gone with someone who was more "clean cut". When you think about it, if Butch didn't pull over, would Maura still be here today? Was his statement to her that he was going to call police the catalyst that spooked her and caused her to run away so she wouldn't get in trouble again, this time for a DUI while on probation? In my personal opinion, if Butch didn't pull over things may have gone very differently and I do think that is what caused her to leave the accident scene. But Butch Atwood obviously had no way of knowing this, he was just trying to help. Lets hear your thoughts, Jaxie and everyone else!

Maggie Freeleng and Art Roderick recently appeared on Nancy Grace's podcast ('Crime Stories') to talk about The Disappearance of Maura Murray. They shared a bit of additional info on Butch Atwood. The first thing I found interesting was in relation to all the police conspiracies. They primarily revolve around Haverhill NH Police, and how they may be covering things up or haven't done enough and refuse outside assistance. The later has now been debunked. Art and Maggie have been able to be in communication with local and state police and said on the podcast some things they have been extremely open about (which is awesome, because they have never been like this before!), other things they aren't (which is understandable; open investigation and all). They said that within the first few days when it was discovered Maura really was missing (I've always assumed that at first they probably though she was DUI and hiding until sober, which happens all the time) Haverhill NH police immediately called in New Hampshire State Police and requested their assistance, turning the case over to them to start it up and running. Butch, being the last person to see her, was obviously someone they were interested in and questioned extensively. His family originally came from Massachusetts and had members in the police down there. Art mentioned that Butch was a "hoarder. Nancy thought that was interesting as it's a psychological thing. They have records from private investigators who went as far as to interview the Atwood's friends. The friends said they never went over because you couldn't even GET into the house due to the extent of the hoarding. Yikes! Art says NH State Police Major Crimes Unit has not found anything that would connect him in Maura Murray's disappearance. Nancy asked if his home was searched, since she says it's easy to hide things in a hoarder's home, but Art says he's not sure and implies that's something police won't give an answer to. Nancy says "...so they quasi-investigated Butch at the time" and Art said "Oh, they did MORE than just 'quasi' investigate him".... "everyone who had contact with Maura in the past and around the time she went missing has been investigated and cleared to a certain degree". Thought you guys might find this interesting. I definitely don't think Butch had anything to do with it for a number of reasons. He immediately called police (from outside on his front porch in fact), his wife and mother were home. When the police called back they spoke to his wife, plus, when he first saw police arrive he went and sat in his bus (which was just minutes after he talked to police based on the timeline- remember, he wasn't the first to call, it was Faith Westman, so by the time Butch drove up to Maura and went back to use his portable landline house phone to call the cops, they were well on their way to the scene already). I know people have said it's weird he was sitting out on his bus doing paperwork, but I don't. I probably would have done the same thing. I'll totally admit I'd be pretty nosy in a situation like this especially if I had interacted with the victim and would want to be able to see what police were doing out of curiosity and to also make sure she was ok. Sitting in the bus doing paperwork would allow him to do this (he was about 100 yards from the crash but being up high in the bus may have given him a better vantage point). I don't know if he was doing paperwork because he needed to to paperwork, or was doing it out there so it didn't look like he was being nosy, but whatever. The neighbors saw Butch and likely would have seen if Maura went with him. We know she did not accept her offer, so if she did go with him it would have probably been against her will, and that would have been quite a struggle since he was a tall, super obese elderly man, and if you're in the process of being abducted you'd likely be making noise to draw attention. This is another reason I've always thought it she *was* abducted it would have had to be away from the accident scene and out of view, or, more likely, she got in a car willingly with someone who didn't look like a public official who would call police. But that's just one theory. I do not have an actual opinion of what happened to her, but am more inclined to rule certain scenarios out.

His family originally came from Massachusetts and had members in the police down there. hmmmm..... ok remember the interview we talk about last week when butch atwood lied in the newspaper interview & says he always helps people in accidents because its second nature to him b/c he was a former police officer in taunton , ma? the person who answered me with the nice reply said well u never know if that was an exact quote or not the reporter could have goten it wrong ... i thought how could they get something like that wrong?! well elle you say art said in nancy grace interview that butch's whole family were police officers in ma so maybe they really did misquote him. it could have been something as simple as like ''i come from a long line of taunton masschusetts police officers so it seems 2nd nature to me to help people in need''' meaning growing up his whole family always did and he does it now.... i agree with you it would be cool if we could get in touch w the reporter to see if they still have their notes and find out if it was an accident misquote or really was a direct quote.........

Hey Jaxie! Please do NOT apologize. You are more than welcome here! I'm not sure what forum you are referencing in your post, but I'm sorry you went through that. That's very, very odd that you would be told not to ask questions if in fact the subject matter on the forum involved Maura or missing person's cases. It is a VERY complex case, so naturally people will have questions that cannot be outsourced and only answered by those who have been actively involved and know the ins's-and-out's of Maura's disappearance. As the saying goes, "There are no stupid questions...Only stupid answers" (one of them being "Don't ask questions"), Hah! Is Jaxie your real name? If so, it's very cool and unique!

Not that we will ever know at this point, but I've always felt Butch Atwood knows/knew something.

We just watched the series. We would place our bets on BUTCH ATWOOD.
1. He was last to see her, that anyone knows. 2. He says she was vulnerable, had been drinking. Therefore, he knows she is vulnerable. 3. He had the opportunity, not once, but twice. SUPPOSEDLY at accident scene, and then possibly at point of dog scent, in front of his house. 4. In one episode, the state trooper said he went one way to look for her, and atwood and his bus went the other way, "toward the lakes region". 5. Atwood injected himself in to the search. 6. Was she ever on the bus? Was bus searched? He has place to hide her, away from wife and her mom. 7. Atwood, volunteered Mauras refusal, and himself going to call police. In one statement, he takes himself out of the picture, and puts the white hat on............SUSPICICOUS. 8. Told his wife, after calling police, that he was going out to bus to do paperwork? WTF? Why? 9. Cop says, "I did not know atwood before"....why volunteer? 1o. Atwood, is HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT..........fat burly bus driver, that no one suspects...............IT WAS HIM.

Jus got done watching your “disappearance of Maura Murray”series. Wanted to know why the police were not asked about the inconsistency in their stories. Specifically, was Butch asked to go search for her, like the cop that left the scene said or did the cop that remained did not know or barely talk to Atwood. They had completely different stories about the interaction with him. But the inconsistency of stories. The original officer, I think his name was Jeff, but I’m not sure, claims he asked Atwood a few things, then he volunteered he didn’t know him, then he let him go. The second policeman claimed, the original officer sent Atwood to look for her, that is why he left and went the other way. Totally opposite stories. Somebody is lying. Anyway, also your psychic came out in an episode of “real housewives of Beverly Hills”, it was hard to listen to her knowing that. Thanks, Kathy

Rushed reports of possible discovery of Maura's remains based on someone finding a small bone, possibly human, on Loon. Some hack reached out to family to generate reaction and create news. Murray disappeared from Rte 112 in Woodsville near Bradley Hill Road, 23 miles west of Loon down 112. 44.11872 N 71.93627 W. Compare with coordinates of abduction site of Betty and Barney Hill precisely 42 years, 4 months, 7 days before, 44.0842 N. 71.6842 W. Loon is not within geometric configuration.
